By using a harvesting infrastructure over a longer period there is greater job creation, which is an important core element. Boomerang Fruits runs a sustainability based management program, is which we cover both production as well as social relations.
Boomerang Fruits farm operates in unison with the diverse ecosystem of birds (eg Jackal Buzzards) and animals (snakes, buck, leopards, baboons, spotted genets and caracal) on the farm as well as ecouraging local plant species development (Fynbos and indigenous grass species) and the incorporation of organic mulches. Alien vegetation is kept under control as a contributing measure of water management on the farm.
Boomerang Fruits maximises production from the early part of the year right through to the end of the season. The advantage of early variety development is that once your fruit is off, you can immediately cut your water down by 50%. Some of Boomerang’s varieties were already harvested by the second week of January. Those varieties currently consist of 10% of their farming area, and by the end of January 20% – 25% of the farm is using 50% of the required water, compared harvesting mid to late season varieties
Boomerang Fruits uses solar panel power for the
packing and cold storage facility, which makes
up a large portion of our electricity usage. While some grid electricity is used for pumping, most water source are gravity fed.
